Ormsaltaren Signs Grand Theft Culture — Stockholm's Rock Trailblazers Find a New Home
The band behind "Down The Line" and "Spinning" joins the Ormsaltaren roster.
Ormsaltaren is thrilled to announce the signing of Grand Theft Culture, the Stockholm-based four-piece rock band whose genre-defying sound has earned them millions of streams, a Bandit Rock nomination, and a reputation as one of Sweden's most exciting rock acts of the last decade. The recording rights to the band's catalogue are now with Ormsaltaren, who aims to bring new life into their acclaimed repertoire.
A Band That Broke the Mould
Grand Theft Culture was formed in Sweden, but it was during the band's time living in Hollywood, California that their music was released to the world — and that transatlantic DNA is woven into everything they do. The band emerged with a sound that defied easy categorisation — a collision of old school rock 'n' roll swagger and modern electronic production, laced with inventive sampling and piano-driven arrangements. Their breakout single “Down The Line” (2014) became a sensation, surpassing two million streams on Spotify and earning the band a nomination for “Breakthrough of the Year” at the Bandit Rock Awards.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 2017 and hailed by critics as bordering on a masterpiece, showcased a band operating at a remarkable level. From the searing energy of “Burn” to the hypnotic pull of “Spinning” and the blues-infused brilliance of “No More”, Grand Theft Culture proved they could weave samples, pianos, guitars, and raw vocal power into something genuinely original. The album was described by reviewers as “nothing short of genius” across its best stretches — a record where three quarters of the tracklist delivered absolutely phenomenal music.
From Stockholm to the World
The momentum from “Down The Line” opened doors far beyond Sweden. Grand Theft Culture toured alongside heavyweight acts Hardcore Superstar and Backyard Babies, created a buzz across the United States, and landed a coveted slot on the legendary Kiss Cruise. Their reach even caught the attention of DJ and production giant Skrillex, who gave the band social media support. Vocalist and guitarist Michel Santunione further cemented his reputation on the international stage, touring globally with some of Sweden's biggest rock bands and performing in the musicals Queen: We Will Rock You and Rock of Ages.
A New Chapter with Ormsaltaren
After a prolonged period of silence, Grand Theft Culture have found a new home. Ormsaltaren now holds the recording rights to the band's catalogue and is committed to revitalising their music for a new audience — ensuring that tracks like “Down The Line” and “Spinning” continue to reach the listeners they deserve.
But the story doesn't end with the back catalogue. Songwriter and guitarist Michel Santunione does not rule out that a new single or album will see the light of day in the future.
“We've been on a 12-year vacation, let's see where we end up.”
— Michel Santunione
For a band whose debut was widely considered to be tantalisingly close to perfection, the prospect of new music — with the creative freedom and fresh energy that comes with a new label partnership — is an exciting one. The masterpiece may yet be on its way.
